Stevenson Motorsports Audi start Front Row at Road America

Third Consecutive Front Row Start for Stevenson Motorsports at Road America

Elkhart Lake, Wis. (6 August 2016) – As the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship enters the final stretch of its 2016 season at Road America this weekend, Stevenson Motorsports’ twin Audi R8 LMS machines are set to start Round 8 from rows one and two.

After leading the 15-minute qualifying session, a fast lap from a competitor prevented Andrew Davis from notching his first pole position of the season. But the American racer’s fast lap still yielded another front row starting position for the No. 6 Stevenson Motorsports Audi R8 LMS that he shares with Robin Liddell.

“I’m really proud of the team,” said Davis after posting a fast time of 2:07.759-seconds. “The Stevenson Motorsports Audi R8 LMS is running well. It was really good this morning. Definitely the heat in the track and having just had the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race made it a bit greasier than I expected. I actually thought I was well off of where I was. I thought I was well back in field because it’s so competitive but I was happy when Mike Johnson told me I was P2. But I’m really proud of the team, they’re working long hours and I just can’t say enough for how hard they work. It makes me a little disappointed because I’ve been after this pole for three races in a row now! It’s still very nice to have our Stevenson Audi up on the front row and Matt (Bell) had a great qualifying as well to put it P3. We have the cars up front where they need to be and we’ve made something out of that in the past two races so we’ll try to do the same thing again and maybe even go one better – that’s our plan!”

Both Stevenson Audi’s showed strength in the three hour-long practice sessions as both the drivers and team worked to pull all of the speed possible out of the German machines around the long 4-mile circuit.

Matt Bell filed his No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Audi R8 LMS he shares with Lawson Aschenbach in right behind Davis after posting a fast time of 2:07.785-seconds in the qualifying session for third on the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase grid.

“I’m always happy when both Stevenson cars are pretty close together,” explained Bell. “It’s fun when you kind of get to fight together with your teammates. It shows how close this team is. This weekend is not like Lime Rock. Our cars are not set up super dissimilar, but they’re not identical. So we can both find a way to get the same thing out of it. Congrats to Andrew (Davis) and all those guys on the No. 6 car. Our car is really good here. It’s a slick track especially when it gets hot. We’re out here qualifying right after the Continental Tire race ended, so it’s kind of snotty out there. It’s a relatively smooth track and has a lot of high speed corners and that’s how you design a track for an Audi R8 LMS. We’re going to bring our A game tomorrow and keep the car where it is.”

The result marks the third consecutive front row start for the Jacksonville, North Carolina-based team and the squad looks to score its third consecutive podium in Sunday’s 2 hour 40 minute race, set to go green at 3:05 PM local time (4:05 PM ET).
